PSYCHE (ISSN: 1039-723X) is a free electronic journal dedicated to supporting the interdisciplinary exploration of the nature of consciousness and its relation to the brain. PSYCHE publishes material relevant to that exploration from the perspectives afforded by the disciplines of cognitive science, philosophy, psychology, physics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence and anthropology. Interdisciplinary discussions are particularly encouraged.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE NEW EDITORS-ELECT OF PSYCHE

Dear Members of the ASSC,

As you know, the ASSC has recently taken over the journal PSYCHE (http://psyche.cs.monash.edu.au). This journal has flourished duriing the last decade under the editorial leadership of first Patrick Wilken and now Tim Bayne. This is an exciting undertaking for the ASSC.

We have now successfully completed an international search for two Executive Editors to lead the relaunch of the journal and to carry the journal forward. We are very pleased to announce that the two new editors-elect of Psyche are Gabriel Kreiman and Robert van Gulick.

  • Gabriel Kreiman studied Physical Chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. He then obtained a Ph.D. under the mentoring of Prof. Christof Koch at Caltech. He did his post-doctoral training with Prof. Tomaso Poggio at MIT. He is now an Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology and Neuroscience at Children's Hospital Boston, Harvard Medical School and the Center for Brain Science, Harvard University.

  • Robert Van Gulick is Professor of Philosophy at Syracuse University where he also currently serves as Chair of the Philosophy Department and Director of the Cognitive Science Program. His research is in the philosophy of mind, and many of his publications have concerned various issues about consciousness including qualia, the knowledge argument, higher-order and reflexive theories, most recently in his so called HOGS (Higher Order Global State) model of consciousness. He has also published on general issues in the metaphysics of mind including functionalism, intentional content, reduction, emergence, externalism, and mental causation. His more general reference publications include the entry on Consciousness in the online Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. In 2002-03, he served as President of the Society for Philosophy and Psychology, and he has been twice awarded NEH Faculty Fellowships. He writes poetry on the side.

Stay tuned for new developments as the transition takes place at the journal over the next few weeks.

Please join me in congratulating and in welcoming Gabriel Kreiman and Robert van Gulick. They are at the helm of what promises to be a major focus for our work at ASSC in advancing the science of consciousness.

And join me please in thanking the current editor Tim Bayne for his enormous (and indeed ongoing) service to Psyche and consciousness studies.
